The Luxury of Being Honest

“There’s a reason he’s still single. I need to know why.”

Bookish Emma Davis is reinventing her life. She never expects her new job as a home health aid to come with a sexy, hunky, grunty mountain man attached. He treats flirting like an Olympic sport and has handyman muscles that make her melt, but she soon realizes she doesn’t know him. No one does. He has walls up so high they reach the moon. On top of that, he’s off limits.

Grant Parker is a house flipper who has the word ‘casual’ on lockdown mode. He’s sexy, strong and confident. A master at avoiding commitment and absolutely not husband material. Grant has secrets that run deep and he doesn’t want any woman too close to him. But when Emma Sue Davis walks into his grandfather’s life, she walks into Grant’s life too.

Emma has a way of poking and prodding at the raw, ragged edges of his past that leaves all his secrets unraveling. Will she keep his secrets safe, or will they burn through town like a wildfire, destroying the fragile life he’s created for himself?

“Whatever I’m feeling towards Emma, there isn’t anything casual about it. It’s more like a four-alarm fire.” 🔥🔥🔥🔥

Author’s Note: Open door, slow burn, contemporary, small town romantic comedy. A curvy, plus size literary snob of a heroine. A charming, wounded, emo hero. Found family and a tiny Ozark Mountain town. It’s got steam + spice + love + angst = swoon.

  • Arthur said, “You know, it could be my grandson coming for a visit. That sounds like Roscoe’s bark.”

I ran out front and saw that Modo had a new friend. It looked like a cute little beagle mix. Both dogs were playing with each other, touching noses and wagging tails. They looked happy about this random meet and greet.

I looked up from the dogs and my breath got tangled in my lungs. The most handsome man was walking towards me. Was this Arthur’s grandson? He did not match the image I’d built up in my head.

I turned my attention to the man in front of me. He was tall and broad in all the right places. He looked rugged in his Carhartt jacket and dusty old blue jeans. Hunky.

“So you’re the wayward grandson who doesn’t come to visit. I wondered if you really exist.”

The smile on his face faltered.

Retract. I had a bad habit of saying the first thing to pop into my mind. It was like I had a broken filter that I’d never figured out how to fix.

“Sorry about that. I meant it as a joke, but it may have landed wrong. You’re Arthur’s grandson. He’s talked a lot about you. Good to finally meet you, Grant.”

A clouded expression flashed across his face. Then the man’s smile quirked back up on one side. “You know my name, so you’re at an advantage here. And you are?”

“I’m Emma. I’m a home health aide from New Hope and I’ve been coming to see your grandfather for about a month now.”

Grant walked up the steps to the porch and shook my hand. He was even more attractive close up. And taller. I felt sparks erupt when he touched me.

His hand felt calloused and rough… manly. My breath caught in my throat and I worked on composing myself. He’s off limits. Be professional.
